Matt Lucas releasing comedy coronavirus song Thank You Baked Potato in aid of NHS

The Little Britain star brought back his old Shooting Stars character George Dawes for a funny song that reminds people to wash their hands and follow the rules of the coronavirus lockdown

Matt Lucas is releasing his comedy coronavirus song to help feed NHS workers as they battle the global pandemic.

The Little Britain star, 46, recently brought his old Shooting Stars character George Dawes back to life for track Thank You Baked Potato.

In a funny video, Matt sat at his piano playing and singing his song that encourages people to wash their hands regularly and follow the rules of the imposed lockdown in the UK.

People are only to go outside for shopping, to collect medicine and for one daily bout of exercise.

And people are only supposed to travel to work if it's absolutely essential.

Matt's quirky song goes: "Baked potato changed my life, baked potato showed me the way, if you want to know what is wrong from right you must listen to what potato say.

"Wash your hands and stay indoors, thank you baked potato.

"Only go to grocery stores, thank you baked potato.

"If you want to have a happy day, you must listen to what the baked potato say."

Matt, who suffers from asthma and has been self-isolating at home for over two weeks, has now revealed that he's releasing the song as a charity single.

Sharing a picture of the cartoon cover on Instagram, he wrote: "It’s official - ‘Thank You Baked Potato’ will be released on Friday! All proceeds go to #FeedNHS, providing meals across Britain for our amazing NHS workers "

He re-wrote a George Dawes classic

Matt also appeared on today's The Steph Show.

He told Steph McGovern, who is filming the Channel 4 show from her home: "Because I've got asthma I'm being really careful, I've been in the house for two and a half weeks."

Matt said he was in Chicago filming a pilot when coronavirus started getting serious and he was anxious and worried about getting stuck in the United States.

Talking about where his song came from, he said: "About 20 years ago, I used to be on this very strange panel game show called Shooting Stars and I used to sing songs and I sang a song about baked potatoes.

"About a week ago I was watching the news and saw that people were still going out and it was shocking, so I decided to re-write the song."

Matt says he posted the video on Twitter and only expected about 500 people to watch it, and was blown away when it was viewed more than three million times in just a few days.

In the meantime, he had been working on new campaign Feed NHS, and someone suggested he should release his single in aid of the initiative.
