Tom Cruise Got A Perfect Top Gun: Maverick Poster Ahead Of New Trailer

Tom Cruise Got A Perfect Top Gun: Maverick Poster Ahead Of New Trailer

I've become something of a connoisseur of movie posters (jk, I have no idea what I'm talking about), and I feel the need to appreciate the simple beauty of this design. It's not as overly simplistic as the first No Time to Die poster, but also not as busy as most of the MCU posters, which usually stuff every single character in there. And thankfully it's not as confusing as whatever the heck was happening in that new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker poster.

No, this is just Tom Cruise looking up at the sky -- the wide-open sky full of hopes and dreams and cheesy sentences like that. It shows him on the ground this time, looking up at the future?

It has been more than 30 years since Top Gun came out in 1986. Maverick is a flight instructor now. Who is the "Maverick" of today? One of the pilots in the sky above him? Maybe it's Goose's son, who is apparently called Rooster and played by Miles Teller. Other pilot trainees are played by Monica Barbaro and Glen Powell, with Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Manny Jacinto, Jay Ellis, and Val Kilmer filling out the cast.

Tom Cruise tweeted out a link to the new poster, just like he retweeted the official poster that was shared over the summer:

I don't like that one as much, and not just because of the whole thing with Maverick's jacket changing patches. In both cases, Maverick looks up at the sky, but this new poster just captures that feeling of looking up in awe. That's what fans did when they watched Top Gun on the big screen and now a new generation will be able to do that with the sequel.

You know what other image I liked from the Top Gun sequel, though? The first shot Tom Cruise posted on Day 1 of filming:

That's my jam. It's in keeping with the new one, too -- Maverick gazing at his truest loves. Here's more of what we know so far about Top Gun: Maverick.
