Inside the world of Josh Pieters from Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee friendship to pranking Katie Hopkins

Inside the world of Josh Pieters from Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee friendship to pranking Katie Hopkins

Josh Pieters stunned the internet when he pulled off an elaborate prank on Katie Hopkins, going viral in the process.

But there’s a lot more to him than just that.

The YouTube star, who boasts a following of more than a million, has pulled off countless pranks, after beginning his channel with the help of his best pals Caspar Lee and Joe Sugg.

Starting out by uploading challenge videos with his YouTube besties, a time which he refers to as the ‘boyband era’ of his career, he’s more recently evolved into sharing pretty provocative pranks and social commentary.

One shows him tricking reality stars to appear on fake TV shows, while another sees him convincing influencers to promote gravel on their channels. As you do.

Chatting to Metro.co.uk at VidCon London, Josh explained: ‘I just felt like the videos I was making before had run their course, and people were getting bored of them.

‘So I started working a lot more with Archie Manners, who is a magician and funnyman, and we completely changed the kind of videos I was making to stuff that probably I would more enjoy watching.’

It’s a bold move, but it seems to have worked wonders, with one of Josh’s recent videos racking up more than nine million views.

The video in question, a prank which saw him sneaking an Ed Sheeran lookalike into the recent KSI and Logan Paul rematch, was one of Josh’s finest moments, with him revealing: ‘It all came together really last minute and I wasn’t sure if it was going to work and thankfully it did.

‘It worked really well. And it was at a really big YouTuber event, which was really cool to have it succeed there.’

While Josh’s videos have got a bit more provocative, including his recent Katie Hopkins prank, he insists he’s only fair with what he shares, pointing out that he gives people plenty of opportunities to figure out that it’s all a ruse.

‘We always try to be as innocent as we can with our pranks, and also give everyone a very fair chance to catch on to what we’re doing,’ he explained. ‘So with the reality star video, one Google of the production company, or of any of us would have revealed that the whole thing was a complete sham.

‘Our websites had Colonel Gaddafi as chief of staff and Katie Hopkins herself as another one of the staff members. So I think people do have to be responsible for what they do and what they share, especially when they’re being paid.’

However, it’s not just pranking for the sake of it. In fact, Josh wouldn’t even class his videos as pranks, describing them more as ‘social commentary’, and he revealed that every one of them has to have a message.

Josh has always been open about his pals Joe and Caspar helping him to get his start on YouTube.

However, while Joe has taken over the mainstream, with his stint on Strictly Come Dancing, Josh isn’t as eager to follow in his footsteps.

When asked if he’d be up for taking on the dancing show or anything similar in the future, he pointed out: ‘I would never say never but right now it’s not something I’m that interested in.’

Giggling, he admitted: ‘Also I’m never going to be as good at dancing as Joe…So I’d be too scared to try and fill his dancing shoes.’

Valid points all round.

So what’s next for Josh instead?

As you might imagine, he’s slightly terrified of topping the Katie Hopkins video after it went viral and garnered interest from the likes of Piers Morgan and Matt Lucas.

‘I’m not sure that video’s ever going to be topped,’ he laughed. But I think it’s important to keep making good stuff.’

Teasing that he’s got a lot in the works, we’re not quite sure whether to be excited or terrified.

Josh is attending VidCon London, with him describing the event as an opportunity to ‘give back to those people [who watch my videos] and meet them and show them they’re appreciated.’

Tickets for VidCon London are onsale now.
