Phillip Schofield says ‘talking saved me’ after coming out as gay

Phillip Schofield has said talking ‘saved’ him, three months after coming out as gay.

The 58-year-old confirmed back in February that after 27 years of marriage to wife Steph, he has come to terms with the fact that he is gay.

And he gave insight to the inner turmoil he suffered, by sharing a fundraiser for a young man who took his own life.

Schofield shared a GoFundMe set up in memory of Morgan Mcglynn, to raise money for Guernsey Mind in an effort to prevent male suicide.

The page read: ‘Morgan was a very troubled soul and even through he was surrounded by a loving caring family and many caring and devoted friends this wasn’t enough for him to open up.

‘Tragically Morgan took his own life in the early hours of Sunday morning 17th May 2020.

‘We are heartbroken at his loss and have started this fundraising page in the small hope that we can prevent others suffering as we are losing someone they love as we love Morgan so much. Our hearts are breaking.

And in his statement, which was shared on social media before being read out on This Morning by Holly Willoughby, Phil said: ‘You never know what’s going on in someone’s seemingly perfect life, what issues they are struggling with, or the state of their wellbeing – and so you won’t know what has been consuming me for the last few years. With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.

‘This is something that has caused many heartbreaking conversations at home. I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.

‘My family have held me so close: they have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusion. Yet I still can’t sleep and there have been some very dark moments.’

Since then, he has starred in an emotional mental health campaign urging Britain to ‘get talking’, alongside stars including Ant and Dec, Gordon Ramsay, David Walliams, Holly Willoughby, will.i.am, Lorraine Kelly, Laura Whitmore, Iain Stirling and Harry Redknapp.

Phil recently denied that he has moved out of his family home, as he spends lockdown with Steph, Molly, Ruby and Ruby’s boyfriend in Oxfordshire.
