Nicholas Hoult finds filming sex scenes 'very difficult' as he often bursts into fits of giggles

Nicholas Hoult has admitted he finds sex scenes 'very difficult' to film and often bursts into fits of giggles during takes.

The actor, 30, found it tough to keep a straight face in his love scenes with Elle Fanning in the Hulu series The Great where she stars as Catherine the Great while he plays her husband Peter III.

Speaking on the Variety and iHeart podcast The Big Ticket, Nicholas told how in many of the sex scenes, Peter is either saying outlandish dirty talk or not paying much attention.

Awkward: Nicholas Hoult, 30, has admitted he finds sex scenes 'very difficult' to do and often bursts into fits of giggles during takes

He said: 'They’re very difficult to do because they are very, very funny, and just ridiculous. And already, you’re in a slightly uncomfortable position doing that.

'But then add the sprinkle of hilarity on top of that and it becomes, yeah, very difficult not to start giggling. And I giggle a lot. So that was trouble for me.'

Nicholas added that sometimes he would break because of something funny happening within the scene.

He said: 'It just makes me go and then I’m like, "Right Elle, I can’t look at you for the next take, I’m afraid. So I’m just going to kind of slightly just look just left of your eyeball and now I’ll focus there and maybe then I won’t laugh so much."'

Filming: The actor found it tough to keep a straight face in his love scenes with Elle Fanning in the Hulu series The Great

The actor added that screenwriter Tony McNamara writes 'offbeat' sex scenes where there are often outside elements creeping in.

It comes after Nicholas dropped out of his role in Mission Impossible 7 and will be replaced by Esai Morales.

The actor was set to play the villain in the upcoming blockbuster opposite Tom Cruise but will no longer be taking part, according to Deadline.

Filming on the movie has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the set back meant Nicholas had to drop out out of the project as it is now in conflict with another career commitment.

He said: 'They’re very difficult to do because they are very, very funny, and just ridiculous. And already, you’re in a slightly uncomfortable position doing that'

The role of the antagonist will now be played by Esai who is known for his roles in TV series including How To Get Away With Murder and NYPD Blue.

Along with Tom Cruise, other actors set to appear in the film include Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby and Henry Czerny.

The flick will be the third in the Mission Impossible series to be directed by McQuarrie following his work on Rogue Nation and Fallout.

Mission Impossible 7 is set to be released on November 19, 2021 while another untitled sequel is scheduled for November 4, 2022.

Nicholas added: 'But then add the sprinkle of hilarity on top of that and it becomes, yeah, very difficult not to start giggling. And I giggle a lot. So that was trouble for me' (pictured in December 2019)
